New Quality Gold Medal and New Titanic Whistle Added

Oscar Statuettes Re-sold for $3m

I always feel a little sad when I hear about trophies or medals being re-sold, even when the original winner has passed on. Of course, the trophy or medal is only a symbol of the award that was bestowed, so the recognition of the achievement will always stand, but it just seems a little sad when a winner falls on hard times in later life and is forced to sell their trophies or medals. And a family selling off the awards of a deceased winner also seems quite sad, though of course no-one know the financial circumstances that a family might find itself in. So it was with a touch of disappointment that we read about 15 Oscar statuettes being auctioned off this week. The Los Angeles sale, coming two days after the 2012 Oscar awards, raised $3m. It went ahead against the wishes of the Academy Awards, who now have a rule that forbids winners to sell their iconic gold statuettes. That rule was introduced in 1950, but the Oscars sold at auction this week were all awarded prior to that rule taking effect. The Academy voiced its disappointment: “Members and the many film artists and craftspeople who’ve won Academy Awards believe strongly that Oscars should be won, not purchased,” and continued: “Unfortunately, because our winners agreement wasn’t instituted until 1950, and we don’t have any legal means of stopping the commoditisation of these particular statuettes.” Among the most expensive Oscar awards to sell this week was the 1941 Oscar for Best Screenplay, awarded to Herman Mankiewicz for the screenplay to Citizen Kane. That trophy sold for $588,455 (£369,556) and had previously been sold at auction in London in 1999. So it seems there is a thriving market for ‘second-hand’ Oscars, which quite understandably tends to demean the awards and we agree with the disappointment expressed by the Academy.

Carlsberg Unveils UEFA EURO 2012 Trophy in India

Tournament sponsors Carlsberg launched the trophy for the UEFA EURO 2012 ™ competition in India following a digital campaign for football fans to ‘Vote to get the trophy to your city’. The winning city was Delhi, and the unveiling ceremony on 25th February was the first time this prestigious trophy has been displayed in an Asian country. The trophy itself is known as the Henri Delaunay Cup, named after UEFA’s first general secretary, Henri Delaunay, the former president of the French Football Federation who served UEFA from 1954 until his death in 1955. In 2008 a new trophy was commissioned from Asprey of London, based on the design of the original but larger and heavier. This new trophy is crafted in sterling silver and weighs 8kg. Standing 60cm tall, it bears the names of all the teams that have won EUFA’s EURO competitions on the back of the trophy cup. The Carlsberg initiative to publicise the trophy and the competition in Asia is an interesting expansion of the brand and brings both the sponsor and the tournament to wider and highly enthusiastic audience.

So the 2012 BRIT Awards – or to give them their corporate title, the BRIT Awards 2012 with MasterCard – took place last night and we couldn’t help but notice the trophy statuette. It turns out that the BRIT Awards organisers have been quite innovative in choosing a leading British designer to create a new award, and this year the task fell to pop artist Peter Blake. Perhaps best known, certainly in the music world, for his album cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Blake also designed the sleeves for Paul Weller’s Stanley Road album (1995) and for the Band Aid single Do They Know Its Christmas (1984). Maybe less well known is that Blake designed the cover for the 2001 Ian Dury tribute album Brand New Boots and Panties as Blake had been Dury’s tutor at the Royal College of Art. The Blake BRIT award uses colours from the Union Jack flag and has a strong sixties feel. It is the second year that the BRIT Awards has commissioned a designer to create a one-off trophy for that year’s awards; in 2011 Dame Vivienne Westwood was asked to decorate the iconic statuette. The organisers created a ‘blank canvas’ trophy base which the designers or artists then decorate. This is a masterstroke. It provides a new PR opportunity ahead of the awards, as firstly the name of the designer or artist is revealed, and later the new trophy itself is unveiled; and it ensures that each year’s awards have a different looking trophy to distinguish them. Bravo to the BRITs, lets see how many other major awards ceremonies now start to show this sort of innovation and creativity.

Uppermost Supplies Trophy for Swiss Hickory Championship

The inaugural Swiss Hickory Championship was held at the Engadin Golf Club in Samedan/St. Moritz, Switzerland, on 6th August 2011 and Uppermost supplied and engraved a superb silver trophy for the event. Hickory golf is a branch of the sport dedicated to the traditional game – players use wood shaft clubs and dress in period or retro clothing similar to that used in the early days of golf. Among the appeals of this discipline is the reintroduction of ‘feel’ that using hickory-made clubs brings, and it also allows for classic golf courses to be played in the manner, and with the equipment, for which they were designed. The Engadin Golf Club is the oldest in Switzerland and was founded in 1893. The first Swiss Hickory Championship Days event included a number of competitions across three days, including the Swiss Hickory Championship for which Uppermost supplied the trophy. The event was attended by Perry Somers, 2010 Hickory World Champion, who had the honour of presenting the trophy to the first winner, Roger Furrer. Read full story with images.

Uppermost Silver Whistle for Rugby World Cup?

International rugby union referee Nigel Owens was recently presented with a silver whistle, engraved and supplied by Uppermost, by the Treorchy RFC Juniors and Minis. The whistle was a ‘thank you’ gift from the Welsh club’s young players to Owens as he attended their presentation event. Owens has been selected as a referee for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in September and October, and on receiving the whistle he delighted the young audience by saying he may use it during the World Cup. The whistle is a silver plated Acme Thunderer, which Owens said was his whistle of choice. The engraved whistle is due to get its first outing tomorrow (Saturday 14th May) as Owens is due to referee the Magners League play-off game between Munster and Ospreys.
